Turkey Sausage Gravy
I love biscuits and gravy! It is a classic southern breakfast that is so quick and easy to make. To try and make this at least a little bit healthier, I use turkey sausage instead of pork sausage. So, this recipe is for turkey sausage gravy. Biscuits and Turkey Sausage Gravy is a delicious and hearty breakfast on a cold winter morning.
I would never even attempt to claim that any form of biscuits and gravy is in any way healthy or good for you. Other than providing protein and fuel, there is not much that is nutritionally valuable about biscuits and gravy. That said, this biscuits and gravy recipe is so delicious that I just had to post it. It tastes so good that I don’t even care about the calories that I am consuming. Everyone needs a cheat day!
You can make biscuits and turkey sausage gravy in about 15 minutes if you use refrigerated buttermilk biscuits. That is what I do. It really keeps things simple and they taste great! You can obviously make your own biscuits if you would like to or try this gravy with my Easy Cheddar Biscuits. You could even just pour this gravy over some scrambled eggs if you want to have a protein-packed, lower carb breakfast. I have done this and it is awesome!
What you will need to make Biscuits and Turkey Sausage Gravy:
- 12 oz. fresh turkey breakfast sausage – I use a 12 oz. package of lean fresh turkey sausage breakfast links or patties but you can also use a roll.
- 2 1/2 cups milk – I used organic 2% milk
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 4 tbsp flour
- 1/2 tsp seasoning salt
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
- 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper – just use a pinch or omit if you do not like spicy.
- 1 16 oz. can of refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
How to make Biscuits and Turkey Sausage Gravy:
First, preheat your oven and put the biscuits in to bake while you are making the turkey sausage gravy. They should be ready by the time you are finished making the gravy. The biscuits I use take about 15 minutes, which is about the same amount of time it takes to make the gravy. How perfect is that?
In a large skillet, over medium heat, melt the butter. Then add the turkey sausage and all seasoning. Brown and break up the turkey sausage until it is completely cooked, which will take about 8 – 10 minutes. Lower the heat to medium-low and add the flour to the sausage and stir to mix for about 1- 2 minutes. Finally, slowly stir in the milk to combine with the sausage. Continue to cook and stir for an additional 5 minutes, or until you reach your desired consistency. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting once the gravy starts to thicken.
Note: The longer the gravy cooks, the thicker it will become. If you need to thin your gravy, just stir in a little more milk. Serve the gravy with your biscuits while hot. I hope you enjoy!

I love this recipe and have made it several times. I am allergic to pork. Sausage gravy was always one of my favorite things before I couldn’t eat pork anymore and this recipe is so good! I am also lactose intolerant, so I use vegan butter and unsweetened oatmilk, but you would never know it is dairy free.
Thank you for the compliment, Athena! I am so glad you like the gravy. Biscuits and gravy has always been one of my favorite comfort foods as well!
