Parmesan Garlic Bread

Bread Machine Garlic Bread
This Parmesan Garlic Bread is made in a bread machine and it comes out so moist and flavorful that you can eat it plain, no butter required! It is cheesy, herby, garlicky and buttery right out of the pan. Your kitchen is also going to smell mouthwateringly delicious!

Does using a bread machine make me lazy? Nope. I have better things to do, like making some yummy soup to go with the bread. Using the bread machine requires little to no effort and the result is a fresh, warm and delicious bakery-style loaf of bread. I love it! Feel free to slather on some butter or dip it in oil, but it really does taste awesome all by itself. This parmesan garlic bread is also great for making sandwiches and paninis or pairing with a soup or salad.

What you will need to make Bread Machine Parmesan Garlic Bread:

  • water
  • all-purpose flour – I use organic all-purpose flour.
  • extra virgin olive oil – I use organic.
  • grated parmesan cheese – The powdery stuff.
  • unsalted butter – melted
  • minced garlic
  • garlic powder
  • dried basil
  • dried oregano
  • salt – I used kosher salt
  • granulated sugar
  • Active Dry Yeast

Appliance:

  • 2 lb. Bread Machine

How to make Parmesan Garlic Bread in a Bread Machine:

First, add the water, olive oil, melted butter and minced garlic to the bread pan. I microwaved the butter in a small microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds. Then, add all of the dry ingredients, except for the yeast, to the bread pan. Finally, make a small depression into the flour with your finger and add the dry yeast to the depression. Make sure you do not allow the yeast to come in contact with any liquids.

Bread Machine Garlic Bread Ingredients

Select the basic setting on the bread machine and press start. My bread machine took 3 hours and 45 minutes. I also selected the “light” crust option on my bread machine but I normally select “medium”. The difference was that the top of the loaf was lighter and softer. You can choose based on your personal crust preference.

Once the bread is finished, allow it to cool for 10 minutes. You have bakery-worthy garlic bread without hardly any effort. Enjoy!

  1. I’m new to bread machines and cooking in general. This recipe was my 5th attempt at making bread and it turned out fantastic. I cut a couple of thick slices, cubed them and used them for croutons in home made split pea soup. I also used an end slice as a base with Sweet Baby Ray’s Garlic Parmesan sauce topped with shaved ham, provolone cheese and giardinara which made a nice appetizer. Before posting I made a second loaf to ensure I didn’t just create a one time lightening in a bottle and to my pleasant surprise it was just like the first. This recipe is lightening in a bottle and most excellent.

    1. Thank you so much for such a nice compliment, Terry! I am glad you enjoyed the bread and I love the “lightning in a bottle” phrase, it made my day!

  2. I made this this morning and for lunch we had grilled ham sandwiches with smoked provolone. They were amazing! This bread will be a staple in my house. Thank you!

  3. I forgot the butter in the microwave and added dill and this bread had me craving it after it was gone. Best thing is butter with everything bagel seasoning while warm or after toasted.

  4. I just made this to accompany our dinner. I veganized it by subbing margarine for the butter and nutritional yeast for the parmesan cheese. I read many others suggest adding rosemary so I added a teaspoon as well. Absolutely delicious! Bookmarked for future use.

    1. My very first loaf of bread in my new bread maker. Amazingly tasty! I added 1/2 tsp. rosemary in addition to written recipe. I’ll make it again! All four of us stood around waiting for it to cool enough to cut and taste it. Thank you for the easy and yummy recipe.

    2. Susan, did you do a one to one substitute for the nutritional yeast and the Parmesan? I’m not vegan but I use nutritional yeast sometimes in place of cheese because one of my kids is sensitive to dairy, but mostly cheeses.

  5. Can I use this recipe in a 1.5 machine? I am not sure what the measurements would be for it is not a 2 lb. machine. Thank you.

    1. Yes, for a 1.5 lb. loaf you would use 3/4 of each ingredient. However, I would just cut all of the ingredients in half to make a 1 lb. loaf to start. This will ensure that your machine can handle it. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

  6. My goodness, this bread is insanely good. I use my bread maker at least once a week and this is my new favorite recipe. Couple of notes: I made it on the delay function. I put everything in the bread maker and set it to be done 12 hours later and it turned out perfectly. Also, I used fresh grated Parmesan cheese (grated on a micro plane) with beautiful results. Finally, IMHO, best way to eat this is dipped in a combination of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Wow. Crazy good.

    1. Lisa, how much freshly grated cheese did you use? Same amount? It’s so good, I could overdo it but don’t want to wreck the recipe! Sounds delish!! Thanks.

  7. My machine only does 1lb and 1.5lb bread settings.
How much will I need to cut back on ingredients for doing 1.5 loaf?

    1. Hi John,

I would recommend trying a 1 lb. loaf first, to ensure your bread machine can handle the size of the loaf, and for ease since you would just cut the ingredients in half. The recipe card will do this for you if you input .5 into the box next to “loaf” in the servings section above the ingredient list. If you want to do the 1.5 lb. loaf, just input .75 into the box and it will convert all of the ingredients for you. Let me know if you have any questions, I want your bread to turn out well.

  8. This was my first bread made in my new machine.
    So amazing!
I added fresh rosemary, housed smelled amazing!
    Soft large loaf.
It did take 15 mins more than my basic setting and hit the top of the machine but it worked!
    Thank you so much!

    1. That’s great, Sabrina! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the bread. And yes, different bread machines can vary in settings/times, so I’m happy to hear that you figured out your bread machine. Happy bread making!

  9. Great recipe! I have a smaller bread machine so I only used it to create the dough. And, then I followed the direction of a previous reviewer – I split the dough and made one regular sized loaf and 6 mini-loaves. I let them proof for an hour and then baked at 350 for 35-40 minutes, less for the mini-loaves. But, my oven runs a little hot so others might want to keep the loaves in longer.

Can you cut back on the sugar without affecting results (besides sweetness)?

    1. Thank you, Anne! I appreciate you sharing your results, very helpful for others. And yes, you can reduce the sugar by 1 tablespoon with great results.

  10. Excellent and easy to make.
I have tried more butter and it is softer and I have tried les butter and more olive oil and warm water for the yeast and it grew more and it is more crispy.
No matter if you use more or less of anything, it is still very good
    Thanks

  11. This is the BEST bread machine recipe I have ever made! I made it 3 times in one day! Gave loaves to my family… It comes out so moist and the flavor is unbelievable! If you havent made this bread yet… you dont know what you are missing!

      1. I haven’t made it yet, but it look like a lot of butter/oil for one loaf of bread. Do you think it would work just as well to cut the amount down a little?

  12. Made this bread today! OMG! The house smells like a Restorante in Italy! Couldn’t wait for the bread to completely cool before cutting into it. All I can say is Wow! The texture is perfect, and the flavor is perfect (not overbearing but flavorful). I’m so glad I accidentally came across this site. One question: What would be the best way to store any leftover bread (if there is any leftover)? I always seem to have a problem keeping my other breads from drying out.

    1. Thank you, Dar! I store my leftover bread in a sealed plastic storage bag. Make sure that you allow the bread to cool completely, then try to get as much air out of the bag prior to sealing.

  13. This bread is absolutely amazing and makes the house smell incredible while it bakes! It instantly became a staple in our house. My husband and toddler can’t get enough of it!

  14. Blown away! I tried many bread maker recipes and the end bread is always on the harder side.. Not sure whether it’s oil + butter together, this is awesome! Family loved and approved 🙂 Thanks!!!!!

  15. I made it and it’s a huge hit! Having read the comments, I added fresh rosemary…I didn’t have basil, and also crumbled some of my dehydrated tomato slices in it. Love the flecks of color but it’s the taste and consistency that will have me making more. Soon. It’s in demand at our house now! Thanks so much for posting this. Was wondering about skipping the butter entirely for more of a French bread consistency, and just using the olive oil. Thanks again!

    1. That’s great, Eva! I am so happy to hear that everyone enjoyed the bread! You can omit the butter. That would make it similar to my Italian Herb Bread recipe.

  16. Well all are raving over your recipe so I’m going to make it this morning! I don’t have any dried basil, so I will use rosemary. The recipe calls for the “basic” setting., which I do not have. I do have a white bread setting, so I will use that. Will be back with the results, and the collective opinions of my family soon.

  17. Bread machine recipes are usually hit or miss for me.

This recipe is absolutely flawless! I doubled the garlic but otherwise followed the recipe to the letter. Prettiest loaf that has ever come out of my machine! So moist and flavorful! Definitely a keeper… THANK YOU!

    1. Thank you, Elisabeth, for such a nice compliment! I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed the bread and I truly appreciate the word “flawless”. Your comment just brightened my day!

  18. So, I’ve been through about 100 bread recipes since covid started back in March. This one TOTAL KEEPER! Instead of baking in machine, took dough out after dough cycle ended (45 min). Divided in two, each half going into a loaf pan, let rise an hour and then baked in oven at 350 for 40 minutes. AWESOME! Going on “the list” for sure!

    1. Thank you so much, Scott, for the compliment and for the tip on baking it in the oven. Your comment may help others who would like to do the same. Happy baking!

      1. How did it turn out? I am trying it today for first time. It is baking in the bread machine now. It sure smells heavenly; Can’t wait to taste it!!!

  19. I’m a bread machine newbie, having only owned mine for less than two weeks now. Well, I literally just made this bread using an Amazon Basic bread machine, and it is delicious! It rose so much that it touched the lid of my vertical machine, so the top was a bit messed up, but it is still fantastic! I’m thinking of baking another loaf just to freeze it. One question, if using salted butter, which is almost all we ever keep, is it advisable to reduce the amount of salt in this recipe? Thanks so much for sharing this with us. got anyore good bread machine recipes?

    1. That’s great, Ann! I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed the bread! If you used salted butter and liked it, then I wouldn’t change a thing. And yes, I do have more bread machine recipes! Since you enjoyed this bread, you might want to try my Italian Herb Bread or my Cheddar Bread. Both are yummy!

    2. I am trying this recipe with salted butter as well, and reduced salt by half a teaspoon or so. Using whole wheat flour, didn’t have quite enough oregano so added rosemary to make the difference. Making dough today, will bake tomorrow. Hope its as good as it smells mixing!

  20. This bread is Fantastic. We are a little crazy about garlic, so we make it with 3 tbsp. And a cup of shredded Parmesan instead of grated and it is to die for!! Making it again today with fresh shredded 4 cheese in place of Parmesan… can’t wait!! Thank you Christi, love your recipes!!

  21. My store didn’t have active dry yeast only instant… this is my first time making bread, will this be an issue if I use a packet of instant? I have no idea what to do but I want to make this recipe so badly!

  22. I’m a new bread machine owner and tried this tonight to have with my homemade pasta dinner with meatballs. This bread was absolutely soft and amazing. I only use real parmesan cheese as I’m not a big fan of the can stuff. I missed my parmesan cheese in with my flour before adding it to the machine it turned out beautiful sliced and lightly toasted and served with dinner it was one of the best friends I’ve had in a long time thank you so very much for sharing this recipe and I look forward to trying your other bread machine recipes

  23. My son can’t have parmagean, so I put salted butter and omitted the cheese. It is fantastic. Not dry.

    1. Thank you, Jennie! I am so glad that your bread turned out well, and that both you and your son were able to enjoy it. Your modifications may help others, so thank you for sharing!

  24. WOW. We just had this bread toasted with rib eye steaks. Amazing – tasted just like freshly made under the broiler! We froze the rest in chunks (thanks Ina Garten) and can now have garlic bread anytime in minutes. Thank you!

    1. Hi Brenda,
I have not personally tried this. So, I cannot advise you on how to do it. If I try to adapt this recipe, I will update you. If you try it, I would love to hear the results!

  25. can you use bread flour? Also can you use regular olive oil or does it have to be extra virgin olive oil?

    1. Yes, it is a 2 lb. loaf of bread. I used a 2 lb. bread machine, but mine does not have a “size” option. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope that you enjoy the bread!
