BBQ Chicken Skewers made with the best homemade barbecue sauce! They are tender, juicy, flavorful and perfect for the summer grilling season.
BBQ Chicken Skewers
Do you call them BBQ chicken skewers, chicken kebabs, chicken kabobs, or maybe just “chicken on a stick”? Personally, I think that I usually call them chicken kabobs, but I wanted to be different on this one. So, go ahead and take your pick, but for this recipe, I will call them barbecue chicken skewers. Anyhow, they are so easy to make and one of my personal summer favorites. This barbecue chicken would be great served on Memorial Day or the Fourth of July.
Most people have an opinion when it comes to great-tasting barbecue, and it usually all comes down to the sauce. The BBQ sauce is very important when it comes to the flavor of your grilled chicken. You might already have a favorite barbecue sauce, you can use it, but I highly recommend that you give my Homemade BBQ Sauce a try. It has the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavors. You can make it from scratch in 10 minutes or less!

BBQ Chicken Ingredients
- boneless skinless chicken breasts – cut into 1-inch pieces
- Barbecue sauce – Try my Homemade BBQ Sauce or use your favorite.
- marinade – see below
BBQ Chicken Marinade
- BBQ sauce – I also use my homemade barbecue sauce in the marinade.
- orange juice
- soy sauce
- olive oil
Note: You will also need skewers. I used metal skewers. If you use bamboo skewers, make sure that you soak them in water first. Wood burns!
How to make Grilled BBQ Chicken Skewers
First, cut the chicken into 1-inch pieces, then place the chicken into a sealable storage bag. Mix the soy sauce, orange juice, olive oil, and barbecue sauce together to create the marinade. Pour the marinade over the chicken, seal the bag and shake to coat. Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight.
Thread the marinated chicken onto the skewers. Reserve the marinade for brushing. Preheat the grill over medium-high heat. Brush the grates with oil.
Grill the chicken kabobs for about 10 – 12 minutes, turning occasionally for even cooking. Brush with the reserved marinade when turning the skewers.
During the last couple minutes of cooking, brush with extra barbecue sauce, not the marinade. Ensure the chicken is cooked through and juices run clear.
Serve immediately with extra barbecue sauce for dipping and enjoy!
Note on barbecue sauce: You will use 1/2 cup of barbecue sauce for the marinade, then another 1/2 cup for brushing at the end. Then serve with additional barbecue sauce on the side for dipping. My recipe for barbecue sauce makes about 2 cups, which is the perfect amount. Get the recipe here: Homemade BBQ Sauce
