Shirley Temple Drink

The Shirley Temple drink became my daughter’s favorite while we were on vacation in Mexico. This mocktail is super simple, but since it brought her so much joy, I had to share it. If you want to give your kids a fun and “fancy” treat, try this. This refreshing beverage induces smiles even when you are not on vacation.

This drink is named after the famous child actress, Shirley Temple. The legend is that when she was out to dinner at a nice restaurant with her parents, possibly the famous Brown Derby, the bartender made her a special non-alcoholic cocktail so that she could feel fancy too. Ironically, Shirley Temple herself has said that she did not like it since it was “too sweet”. I personally agree. That is why I add lime or lemon juice to my recipe, to balance out the sweetness with a little tart. Most kids really enjoy sweets, so for them, it shouldn’t be an issue. However, I do recommend adding a little lime!

What’s in a Shirley Temple Drink?

A classic Shirley Temple drink is made with ginger ale and grenadine. A more modern version replaces the ginger ale with lemon-lime soda.

Shirley Temple Ingredients

  • ginger ale – lemon-lime soda, like Sprite, works as well.
  • grenadine – you can adjust the level of sweetness by adding more or less.
  • maraschino cherries – for garnish. Add as many as you want!

Optional:

  • lime or lemon – sliced as garnish and squeezed to add juice to the drink to balance the sweetness.

You can also make this mocktail a true cocktail by adding a shot of vodka or another liquor of your choice. If this drink is too sweet for your liking, I have listed a couple of alcoholic cocktails below that look similar but are for adults only.
