Tuna Cobb Salad

This Tuna Cobb Salad recipe is a twist on the classic Cobb Salad. The Original Cobb Salad was named after Bob Cobb and was a signature dish at his Brown Derby Restaurant in Los Angeles.

I have been to the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood Studios, and of course, I ordered the Cobb Salad. The main difference in my variation is that I made my Cobb salad with tuna fish and without bacon and fried chicken, so it is a bit healthier being lower in fat and calories. Tuna is a rich source of protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids but is very low in fat. Winner!

A tuna cobb salad is very filling and makes a great dinner salad or a hearty protein-packed power lunch. It is perfect for pescatarians who do not eat meat. If you do eat meat and don’t care about the fat and calorie content, feel free to toss in some crunchy bacon. I have also included a homemade vinaigrette dressing recipe that is quick, easy, delicious, and perfect for this salad. You can use store-bought dressing if you would prefer, but homemade salad dressing is healthier, tastes better, and can be made in about 2 minutes!

Cobb Salad Ingredients

Cobb salad ingredients are very nutritious and packed with protein, vitamins, minerals, omega 3’s, and antioxidants. This Cobb Salad is also low carb and keto friendly!

  • Lettuce – I used chopped romaine lettuce, but you can use various chopped salad greens.
  • Tuna – I use white albacore tuna fish from a pouch or yellowfin tuna, but you can use any canned tuna as well. You can also use cooked fresh tuna, like seared ahi tuna, for a fancy dinner salad.
  • Avocado – sliced or diced.
  • Tomatoes – I used cherry tomatoes, but grape tomatoes or regular diced tomatoes work as well.
  • Eggs – hard-boiled eggs sliced or diced.
  • Gorgonzola cheese – or blue cheese crumbles. The original Cobb salad was made with blue cheese, but I prefer gorgonzola.

Tuna Cobb Salad Ingredients

Cobb Salad Dressing

  • Balsamic vinegar – or red-wine vinegar, like the original Cobb salad dressing.
  • Olive oil – or avocado oil.
  • Dijon mustard
  • Lemon juice – fresh or bottled.
  • Garlic – fresh minced garlic or jarred minced garlic.
  • Salt and pepper – I use kosher salt and freshly ground pepper.

As an alternative to the Cobb salad dressing, you can also use this healthy Apple Cider Vinaigrette which pairs very well.

How to Make a Cobb Salad with Tuna

To make a Cobb Salad with Tuna, you can make the dressing and hard-boiled eggs in advance, then refrigerate them until ready to use. It makes this salad super quick and easy!

First, make the cobb dressing, add the oil, vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, minced garlic, salt, and pepper to a mason jar. Screw on the lid and shake well to combine the ingredients. You can also whisk the ingredients in a small bowl.

To make the hard-boiled eggs, you can use an egg cooker or place the eggs into a saucepan and fill the pan with water so that it covers the eggs. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then turn off the heat. Cover, and leave the eggs in the water for 10 – 15 minutes, depending on how you would like your eggs cooked. Once the eggs have finished, carefully pour out the hot water, then run cold water over the eggs to cool them. Let the eggs sit in the cold water until they have cooled. Once they have cooled, either refrigerate them until ready to use or peel off the shell, slice and top your salad.

Add the lettuce to a large salad bowl or serving dish, then add rows of drained and flaked tuna, sliced hard-boiled eggs, sliced avocado, crumbled gorgonzola cheese, and halved cherry tomatoes. Give the dressing a good shake or stir, then drizzle the dressing over the salad. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Serve immediately and enjoy!
