This homemade pumpkin spice recipe makes organic pumpkin pie spice with Ceylon cinnamon for healthy pumpkin spice, better than store-bought.
Pumpkin Pie Spice
This homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe creates a well-balanced spice blend. It is quick, easy, healthier, and more cost-effective than buying it at the store.
Pumpkin spice ingredients can vary. I use organic Ceylon cinnamon in pumpkin spice instead of cassia cinnamon, since cassia cinnamon can be toxic in large quantities, and I consume a lot of cinnamon. I have never found a store-bought pumpkin spice with Ceylon cinnamon, which is one of the reasons I make my own pumpkin spice. Making your own pumpkin pie spice also allows you to make a large batch and adjust the ingredient ratios to your taste.
Pumpkin pie spice is a versatile spice blend. You can add it to bread and muffins, desserts, breakfast recipes, and even savory dinner recipes like pasta! I have included some ideas to try below. I hope you enjoy!
Homemade Pumpkin Spice Ingredients
Homemade pumpkin spice ingredients can easily be adjusted to taste. Here are the 5 ingredients in pumpkin spice. I always use organic spices.
- Cinnamon – I use organic Ceylon cinnamon. Ceylon, or “true cinnamon,“ is healthy, while the Cassia variety can be toxic in large amounts.
- Ginger – I love ginger for the warm, peppery, and slightly sweet flavor that it adds. It also has many health benefits.
- Nutmeg – Nutty, earthy, slightly sweet, and a little spicy.
- Allspice – Allspice is only one spice, also known as Jamaica pepper or myrtle pepper. It tastes like a combination of cloves, cinnamon, black pepper, and nutmeg, which makes it a great addition to a chai spice mix.
- Cloves: Ground cloves add a warm, pungent, and slightly sweet flavor with a noticeable spiciness and bitterness.

You can also add all the ingredients to a bowl, stir well to combine, then store in an airtight container. This is the best way to make a larger batch since you can easily double, triple, or quadruple the ingredients, and adjust to your taste.
