Chicken with Tomato Sauce

Chicken with Tomato Sauce is a family favorite! The garlic tomato butter sauce tastes so good that you could put it on almost anything!

This chicken recipe uses ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. It is a simple chicken dish but really delivers on flavor. The chicken and tomato sauce can be served over pasta or you can soak up the extra sauce with some bread. Maybe just have both!

Okay, I actually did serve it with both the bread and the pasta. I am an overachiever when it comes to eating. I served it over farfalle pasta with a side of Parmesan Garlic Bread. It was so good that I could make an entire meal out of just the garlic bread and the sauce. You might be thinking, “garlic bread with garlic tomato sauce?” YES! Garlic is good for you. Plus, it keeps the vampires at bay. Seriously, you really should try it. Yum!

If you would like to keep this recipe low-carb and gluten-free, try serving it with zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash or other pasta alternatives. However you decide to serve it, I hope that you enjoy the Skillet Chicken in Garlic Tomato Sauce!

How to make Skillet Chicken in Garlic Tomato Sauce

Skillet Chicken in Garlic Tomato Sauce is so quick and easy to make. You can have it ready in about 20 minutes!

Skillet Chicken

First, generously season your chicken breasts with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat the olive oil in a large, deep skillet or pan over medium to medium-high heat. Add the chicken breasts to the pan and cook for about 5 minutes per side, or until juices run clear, turning a nice golden brown. Once cooked, reduce the heat to low and carefully remove chicken from pan and set aside. Note: Cooking times can vary depending on the size and thickness of your chicken breasts. The internal temperature should be 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Make sure that you have reduced the heat to low, then add the minced garlic to the same pan with the oil. Cook the garlic for 1 minute, then slowly add the crushed tomatoes to the pan, then add the dried basil and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Slowly increase the heat to bring the sauce to a simmer. Keep the sauce at a simmer so that it does not splatter. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Whisk in the butter until melted, then whisk in 2 tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese. Carefully return the cooked chicken breasts to the pan and allow them to simmer in the sauce for an additional 3 minutes.

Serve over cooked pasta and garnish with additional parmesan cheese. As an alternative, you could serve it with some bread for dipping in the sauce and a nice side salad.

I made this recipe last night. The only change I made was to use fresh basil instead of dried, because I had some in the garden. Delicious! We did not serve it over pasta. We just served the chicken with some sauce and then some veggies on the side. Hubby said, “you can make this anytime! It’s great!”

Excellent sauce. The sauce made the dish and the rest of the ingredients were along for the ride. I only use Cinto San Marzano Whole\crushed Tomatoes.
For consistent doness on the chicken, I use a mallet and pound them out to even thickness and either grill or pan fry.

  3. I made this last night. Big hit. I added onions to the sauce. Was amazing and the I looked forward to the leftovers as well. Great recipe.

  4. This is great! I added some sweet onions right before the garlic and it gave a little extra layer of flavor! Love the dish and so did my family!
