Roasted Hazelnuts

This roasted hazelnut recipe shows how to roast hazelnuts in the oven to make spiced hazelnuts, dry roasted hazelnuts, and salted hazelnuts.

Roasted Hazelnuts

Freshly roasted hazelnuts, or filberts, taste so much better than store-bought. Plus, roasting nuts at home allows you to control the seasonings and customize them to your preference. You can make plain unsalted dry-roasted hazelnuts, salty, sweet, or savory hazelnuts with one of the spice blends that I have included.

Healthy and deliciously flavorful, these roasted hazelnuts can be used in so many ways! Hazelnuts are perfect for snacking, and they are wonderful additions to breakfast recipes, savory dinner recipes, and sweet dessert recipes. Try adding them to salads, smoothie bowlschia puddingbrownies, cookies, bread, French toastfudge, waffles, pesto, pasta, or create your own hazelnut recipes by adding them to the dish of your choice. I hope you enjoy!

Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts are absolutely delicious and one of my favorite nuts, and for good reason! While most nuts have many health benefits, hazelnuts are also one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable nuts.

Hazelnut Health Benefits

Hazelnuts are rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamin E, manganese, and dietary fiber, providing many health benefits, which include heart health, reduced oxidative stress, skin health, and blood sugar management.

While hazelnuts have a high concentration of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals similar to other nuts like pecans and pistachios, hazelnuts have the highest concentration of the antioxidant known as proanthocyanidins, a type of polyphenol that has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that could give them some anti-cancer properties as well. So let’s roast some healthy hazelnuts and enjoy!

Hazelnut Sustainability

Hazelnuts are one of the most sustainable tree nuts, along with walnuts. However, peanuts are the most sustainable nut, but they are technically a legume and are grown underground. They require significantly less water than almonds, since hazelnut trees are dry-land crops, requiring minimal to no irrigation in regions with adequate rainfall. Hazelnuts also have a low carbon footprint and improve soil health since hazelnut trees have extensive root systems that bind the soil, prevent erosion, and naturally sequester carbon. Hazelnuts are also naturally resistant to many pests, so they require fewer chemicals and pesticides than many crops. So feel good about eating these tasty nuts!

Filberts

Hazelnuts are also called filberts or cobnuts in some regions. However, filberts and hazelnuts are the same nut. The term filbert is used for hazelnut, likely to honor Saint Philbert, since his feast day falls on August 20th, which is the beginning of the hazelnut harvest season.

How to Roast Hazelnuts

This is how to roast hazelnuts in the oven. I have included instructions for how to roast hazelnuts with oil and salt and/or seasoning, since the oil helps the seasonings to stick. The oil also roasts the hazelnuts faster and gives the hazelnuts a darker roast with more depth of flavor and crunch. I have also included how to dry roast hazelnuts below.

First, preheat your oven to 325°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Add the raw hazelnuts to the prepared baking sheet, then pour the avocado oil over the hazelnuts and stir well until completely coated. Sprinkle with salt or optional seasonings, stir, then spread the hazelnuts into a single layer on the parchment-lined baking sheet.

Place the baking sheet onto the center rack of your preheated oven. Roast for 10 minutes, stir, then roast for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, checking after 5 minutes so they do not burn.

Once the hazelnuts are roasted to your liking, carefully remove them from the oven and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet, at least 10 – 15 minutes. Sprinkle with additional salt if desired.

Serve and enjoy, add them to your favorite recipe, or store them in an airtight container to save for later.

Dry Roasted Hazelnuts

To make unsalted dry-roasted hazelnuts, simply follow the instructions above, but omit the oil and salt. You may need to add an extra few minutes to the roasting time when making dry-roasted hazelnuts.
